Season 2003-2004 Event

Dreams in the Golden Country

The Kennedy Center’s Imagination Celebration on Tour New York – 1903 Immigrants, young and old, are flocking to the “golden country” to escape poverty and persecution in Europe. Zipporah Feldman, better known as Zippy, her sister, Tovah, and her mother come to the United States from Russia to join their father who has acclimated himself to the American way much to his wife’s dismay. Tovah witnesses injustice and tries to rally the workers into a union. Zippy finds her voice on the boards of the Yiddish stage. Mama struggles on as she watches her world change before her eyes. Such turmoil is necessary if the Feldmans are to exist in the bubbling melting pot that is the “golden country.” The Bardavon Opera House, Inc. is a non-profit, member based organization. The 2003-2004 Daytime Performance Series is made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a State Agency. Generous support is also received from the Dyson Foundation; the Thomas W. & Florence T. Murphy Fund of the New York Community Trust; Jane W. Nuhn Charitable Trust; Louis Greenspan Charitable Trust; Ann & Abe Effron Fund; Harold & Helen Ross Charitable Trust; Northeast Dutchess Fund of the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation; the NYS Legislature through the Office of the Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation; the Dutchess County Arts Council, as a funded member; Poughkeepsie City School District; Beacon City School District; Friends of Millbrook Music in Schools; Second Hand Rose/Community United Methodist Church; SalomonSmith Barney; Stewart's Shops; Chevron Texaco; and Fleet.
