Fes Festival of World Sacred Music

In the Tradition: Sacred Music The ancient city of Fes, Morocco hosts a music festival each year, “in an attempt to reach a better understanding of people of all faiths through the most universal means of expression – music.” Now they’re on tour, bringing together some of the world’s finest performing artists from different cultures around the globe, engaged in cross-cultural programming that celebrates the human spirit. Francoise Atlan is Algerian Jewish in origin and is considered one of the most beautiful voices devoted to the repertoire of the Mediterranean region. Hadra des Femmes de Taroudant is a unique ensemble from the ancient women’s tribal tradition of southern Morocco. They perform an authentic, earthy set of Islamic music, dance, and ritual. The Anointed Jackson Sisters are a superb Gospel ensemble hailing from North Carolina. Their traditional gospel music borrows from contemporary trends, jazz, and R&B. Jamey Haddad is a percussionist whose musical voice transcends styles and trends. The universal quality of his playing has attracted many international collaborations. Audience members are invited to a pre-concert talk one hour prior performance. Made possible in part by a grant from the Folk Arts program of NYSCA
