Season 2004-2005 Event

Bizet's Carmen

If only Georges Bizet could have known that, despite mixed reviews upon its premier in 1875, Carmen would go on to become perhaps the most popular opera in history. Three months later he died at age 37. Based on the story by Prosper Mérimée, alluring melodic motifs relate with hypnotic intensity a tale of seduction, revenge and inevitable death at the hand of a scorned lover. Opera Verdi Europa brings the timeless tragedy to life with a fully staged production. In French, with English proscenium supertitles. "Free she was born and free she will die…" Carmen
