The Hudson Valley Philharmonic String Competition Committee, Co-chaired by Barbara Van Itallie and Shirley Babcock, has announced the 36th annual string competition.
The competition began in 1966 under the direction of Maestro Claude Monteux, then the HVP artistic director/conductor. It was originally started as a way to find string players for the orchestra. The competition has always attracted some of the finest conservatory string players in the world. Many former winners have gone on to illustrious classical music careers. Previous notables include Marcus Thompson '67, violist (Boston Chamber Players)- Fred Sherry '68, cellist , Ani Kavafian '73, violinist (Lincoln Center Chamber Players- soloist), Adela Pena '85, violinist (Eroica Trio) Judith Ingolfsson '96, violinist (1998 Indianapolis Int'l Violin Competition winner- soloist).
Violin, viola and cello players, ages 18 to 25 from major international music conservatories, compete for cash prizes and the opportunity to perform as a guest soloist with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic the following season. All auditions and recitals all open to the public and offer the community an opportunity to hear outstanding musicians at the beginning of their professional music careers.
