Smokey Robinson Bardavon Gala a Go-Go 2008

The Bardavon is delighted to announce that the great Smokey Robinson with full orchestra will headline the Bardavon Gala a Go-Go 2008 on Sunday, June 8 at 7pm. Gala 2008 Presenting Sponsors include CRM and KeyBank. The gala is also made possible in part through the generous support of the McCann Foundation.

A singer, songwriter, and record producer born in Detroit, Michigan, Smokey started out singing in local groups. In the early 1950s he formed the Matadors which later became the world famous Miracles. A chance meeting with record producer Berry Gordy, Jr. led to a contract with Motown Records as well as an important working relationship. The Miracles had their first big hit in 1960 with Shop Around and developed quite a following with their energetic R&B sound.

Smokey scored many more hits over the years, including the much-covered Besides penning hits for his group, Smokey wrote and produced hits and album tracks for other Motown artists including Mary Wells (My Guy), The Temptations (The Way You Do the Things You Do, My Girl, Since I Lost My Baby, and Get Ready) as well as for The Four Tops, The Marvelettes, Brenda Holloway, Marvin Gaye, and The Contours.

Over his fifty year career Smokey has more than 4,000 songs to his credit. In 2006 he was selected as Kennedy Center Honoree for his contributions to the arts and American culture. That year, he also put out a new album titled “Timeless Love” offering his own interpretation on classic songs such as Cole Porter’s Night and Day and the Gershwins’ Our Love Is Here to Stay.

Funds raised annually by the Bardavon Gala help underwrite many programs that cannot support themselves such as school residencies that bring artists and musicians to local students, ambitious symphonic events, new programs at UPAC in Kingston, and special events for senior citizens.
