Season 2013-2014 Event

Sophie's Choice (1982)

It’s 1947 and Stingo, an aspiring novelist, heads to New York to seek his fortune. At his dingy Brooklyn boarding house, he strikes up a friendship with chemist Nathan Landau and his girlfriend, Polish refugee Sophie. There is something unsettling about this pair; Nathan is subject to violent mood swings, while Sophie seems to be harboring a horrible secret. Stingo soon learns that both Nathan and Sophie are strangers to truth; a series of sepia-toned flashbacks, depicting Sophie's ordeal in a concentration camp ultimately uncover the facts behind her gut-wrenching “choice.” Meryl Streep won the Oscar for Best Actress. Also features fine performances by stars Kevin Klein and Peter MacNichol.
Presented by the Poughkeepsie Public Library’s BIG READ program.
