Ballet Arts Studio presents
Moving Images: Dance in Movies

Moving Images traces the history of dance in movies, from early Bill “Bojangles” Robinson films to Saturday Night Fever and Flashdance, and from The Red Shoes to Black Swan. “Of course, no survey of dance in the movies would be complete without a recognition of the great American musical theater tradition,” said Alex Bloomstein, artistic director of Ballet Arts Studio, "so we’ve got something from Singin’ in the Rain and The Music Man, among others.”

At the Spring Concert, The Dutchess Dance Company will be performing two original ballets, choreographed specifically for the Company: Dance On, by Company Resident Choreographer Selina Chau, and Two Epitaphs for Pina, by studio artistic director Alex Bloomstein. Both works are related to recent well-known dance documentaries—For Ms. Chau’s ballet, the documentary First Position, which follows six young dancers as they prepare for, and participate in, a ballet competition, and, for Mr. Bloomstein, the film Pina, Wim Wenders’ documentary about the life and work of the late, great German choreographer Pina Bausch.
