44th Annual HVP String Competition 2016 Winners Announced
(Poughkeepsie, NY) The 44th Annual Hudson Valley Philharmonic String Competition concluded its multi-day contest on Sunday March 13 in front of over 300 music fans at Vassar Collegeâ€™s Skinner Hall. Three exceptional finalists from twenty string players vying for recognition performed in recital.
First Place: (pictured in the middle) Violinist I-Jung Huang from the New England Conservatory. Ms Jung earns a $3,000 first prize plus an invitation to perform as soloist Brahms Concerto in D Major, Opus 77 with the HVP as part of the 2016-17 season, plus a trip to Italy to perform as part of the â€œMusical Landscapes of Italyâ€ festival in August in San Quirico dâ€™Orcia, Tuscany founded by Poughkeepsie native Steven Slade!

The HVP String Competition, begun in 1966 under the direction of then-HVP Artistic Director/Conductor Maestro Claude Monteux, was conceived as a vehicle to identify talented string players for the orchestra. Decades later, the annual competition continues to attract some of the finest conservatory string players in the world. Many former winners have gone on to illustrious classical music careers. Previous notables include Marcus Thompson â€˜67, violist (Boston Chamber Players); Fred Sherry â€˜68, cellist; Ani Kavafian â€˜73, violinist (Lincoln Center Chamber Players - soloist); and Adela Pena â€˜85, violinist (Eroica Trio).
The judges were: MarÃa Radicheva, Violin. She has been a member of the Manhattan School of Music college faculty since 2005 and of the precollege faculty since 2001. Daniel Avshalomov, Viola. He has been a member of the Manhattan School of Music college faculty since 1984 and precollege faculty since 2004. He is also a member of the faculty of the Aspen Music School. Susan Seligman, Cello. She has been principal cellist with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic since 1984, and is an adjunct lecturer and cello faculty in the Music Department at SUNY New Paltz.
