A New York Theatre Organ Society Salute to Our Veterans

A FREE! silent film screening of 'Wings' accompanied by John Baratta

Join us for a special evening of cinematic history and tribute to our veterans as we present the silent film masterpiece Wings at the Bardavon 1869 Opera House, accompanied by the remarkable talents of John Baratta on the 2/10 Wurlitzer. Released in 1927 and directed by William A. Wellman, Wings is a soaring epic that takes us back to the skies of World War I, capturing the courage and camaraderie of fighter pilots. As we honor our veterans, this screening becomes even more poignant. John Baratta’s live organ accompaniment will enhance every thrilling aerial battle and poignant moment, making this an unforgettable cinematic experience that pays tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of our servicemen and women. Presented by the New York Theatre Organ Society, and sponsored by the MHA Dutchess Veterans Program with additional support from Vincitore’s Hudson Valley Piano Center, and the Central Hudson Valley American Guild of Organists. Don’t miss this unique blend of classic cinema, live music, and heartfelt homage at the Bardavon 1869 Opera House.

About the Artist – John V. Baratta is a native of New Jersey. After graduating from high school, he attended Jersey City State College. There he studied piano and organ, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music education. He has retired from teaching instrumental and vocal music in the public school system with thirty-two years of service. At present, he serves as the Minister of Music for The Old Dutch Church in Kingston New York where he is organist, choir director, and handbell ensemble director. He has served as the house organist for the Middletown Paramount Theatre and Lafayette Theatre located in the state of New York. John also has served as organist for the silent film series at The Grand Theatre Organist located in East Greenville Pennsylvania. Other activities include past chairman of education for the North Jersey Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. In the past has partnered with the New York Theatre Organ Society presenting organ demonstrations to students aged kindergarten through high school. In addition also provided organ lessons for interested students at Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park N.Y. as part of an outreach program sponsored by NYTOS. Some of John’s past achievements include being the recipient of the Music Talent Award and the Music Achievement Award given by the Garden State Arts Center. Also during his tenure as a band director in the public schools, he was awarded the honor of conducting the New Jersey Region One Middle School Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble. As a result of the many years in public school education, Mr. Baratta has written and published a method book aimed at middle school instrumental instruction. Some highlights of John’s recital series include performances at the Cathedral of Saint Patrick in New York City and at many of the local churches in and around the tri-state area.
