Film: The Seventh Seal
1957, dir. Ingmar Bergman
The first of his God-haunted works, The Seventh Seal established Ingmar Bergman in the top ranks of contemporary directors. In one of the most famous images in film, a knight (Max von Sydow) — back from the Crusades — plays chess with Death against a storm-ridden seascape as in a plague-ridden 14th-century Sweden. As the fateful game progresses, and the knight and his squire encounter a gallery of outcasts from a society in despair, Bergman mounts a profound inquiry into the nature of faith and the torment of mortality. One of the most influential films of its time, The Seventh Seal is a stunning allegory of human’s search for meaning and a work of stark visual poetry.
